FOR SALE:
The Pearl Engine Company is now for sale. After thirty years, retirement causes
the reluctant sale of the Pearl Engine Steam Company.

HISTORY:
The Pearl Steam Engine Company began by producing castings for the full scale
replication of an original Edward S. Clark 2 1/2” by 3” bore and stroke marine steam
engine (Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1881). Designed for marine service, The Clark’s
low center of gravity construction and its excellent reliability had immediate appeal
supplying power to users both on and off the water. Various engines powered steam
vessels with a full range of sizes from personal steam launches to the steam tug boats of
that era.

Replicating the Clark Steam Engine as the Pearl Steam Engine called for the
detailed “blue printing” of a completely disassembled original Clark Engine. Next, a
complete set of patterns and core boxes meeting foundry standards was made requiring
significant investment.
The resulting PEARL STEAM ENGINE CASTING KITS were well received
from their very beginning. The high degree of interest in the casting kits encouraged the
next step. PEARL STEAM ENGINE MACHINED KITS were produced and offered.

Interest in the MACHINED KITS proved as high as in the CASTING KITS. Builders
then requested the Pearl Steam Engine to be available configured as a TWIN
CYLINDER 2 1/2” + 2 1/2” by 3”. This too was added to the Pearl Steam Engine
Company offerings.

More recently another engine was identified for replication. This is the revered
N.G. Herreshoff 2 1/2” by 5” steam launch engine (Bristol, Rhode Island, circa 1875).
Unique in its design both then and now, the Herreshoff is efficient in function and artistic
in form. Once again, a rare and original engine was totally disassembled for
documentation. This allowed the Herreshoff to also be accurately “blue printed”. As
with the Clark, the next step was to make a complete set of patterns and core boxes that
would meet foundry standards. Again, as with the Pearl, this required a serious
investment.

Faithful replication to the smallest detail was the result in the Pearl Steam Engine
Company’s ZENITH STEAM ENGINE. Its castings were first sold in the United States
and then internationally.
Having now chosen to retire; only CASTING KITS for both the Pearl Engines
and the Zenith Engine are currently being offered.
